Claire Watz has competed in state tournaments in other activities. But the Edina High School sophomore never came away satisfied with her own performance.“I always seemed to lose under pressure,” she said. That certainly wasn’t the case Wednesday during the state badminton team tournament, played on her home court at Edina High School.Watz’s two wins at No. 4 singles proved decisive in both the Hornets’ 4-3 upset over seven-time defending champion Johnson in the semifinals and their 4-3 victory over Burnsville in the state title match.“In other activities, it seems like we’ve gotten to state and haven’t come through,” said Watz, who also participates in speech, debate and mock trial. “But today we did and I couldn’t be happier.“It feels unbelievable right now.”It was the first state badminton title for Edina and the 199th state team title at the school overall. The Hornets finished 16-5, overcoming an injury that kept No. 1 singles player Betsy Lundberg out for three weeks during the...

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:44:09 GMT

LOS ANGELES — Nick Gordon fouled a ball off his right shin and crumpled to the dirt in pain. Four innings later, Joey Gallo did the same.Gallo was still dealing with considerable swelling after the game, but he avoided a fracture. Gordon wasn’t quite as lucky. The Twins’ utilityman suffered a fractured shin, manager Rocco Baldelli said, and is expected to miss considerable playing time.To top things off, second baseman Jorge Polanco also left early, straining his hamstring while running to first on a groundball in the fourth inning of what for the Twins became a quite painful 7-3 loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday afternoon. That makes Thursday’s off day in Southern California particularly well-timed as the Twins assess the injuries and sift through potential roster replacements.Polanco said after the game that his hamstring felt tight, but he and the team would see how it feels on Friday and go from there.“What happened to me last year (with injuries), it made me more aware,” P...

LOUIS – According to data from CARFAX, more than 2.5 million vehicles tagged with “do not drive” or “park outside” safety recalls remain unrepaired as of May 1, 2023.“I worry there is recall fatigue. And in late April, General Motors issues a “park outside” warning on 40,000 recalled pickup trucks.“These are more serious, more urgent recalls than most because they require drivers to do something unusual,” he said. “Either do not drive it, or in the case of a lot of these cars, they get a park outside order which means don’t park it in your garage, don’t park it next to your garage.
