Spanish Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz launched her bid to become the country's first woman prime minister on Sunday at a packed event in Madrid, where the absence of two government ministers signalled a deepening rift among the progressive left. Before more than 3,000 supporters, Diaz announced her candidacy for the upcoming general elections slated to take place at the end of the year, in which the incumbent leftist coalition government seeks to win another four-year term."Today, I am humbly taking a step forward. Today, I want to become our country's first female prime minister," Diaz told the crowd to a standing ovation. Ask Amy: My wife keeps our finances secret, and she blew up when I suggested we get advice

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:46:09 GMT

Dear Amy: I’m a retired Army officer and since 2008 have deferred all decisions about my finances to my wife, who has an MBA.For the past five years, she did our taxes and I never even had the chance to review them. One year we owed $40k, and this year, $16k.I asked to see our return tonight and suggested that we may want a professional to review the return. The response was “We don’t need a [expletive] accountant!”I earn $215k and she earns $150k annually, and I really don’t know where the money goes.I hope to retire in five years, but feel I need a neutral third-party professional to advise.Thoughts? Not InformedDear Not Informed: You say you are retired from the military, but you are obviously working in another field, now, and looking toward your second retirement. You and your wife are high-earners.This ignorance is on you. You are sharing your life with someone who has expertise in finance, and yet you have surrendered all of your personal fiscal responsibility to her, when you...

Harriette Cole: We were brides at the same time. Now she’s happy and I’m miserable.

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:46:09 GMT

DEAR HARRIETTE: I recently caught up with an old friend of mine. She and I both got married around the same time, more than 20 years ago. She got divorced at least 10 years ago, around the same time that I started seriously thinking about it.All these years later, I’m still miserable, and she seems to be happy. She is single, but she has a great guy in her life. I saw the two of them together, and she seemed content. Meanwhile, I am miserable.Should I consider this to be a sign? Should I get divorced? Is It Time?DEAR IS IT TIME? Your friend’s life is her own, not yours. Of course you can observe her and see how her choices have played out, but you cannot think that your life will unfold like hers if you make a similar choice. The two of you are different people. You can and should look closely at your own life and marriage. Ask yourself what is working and what is not. Drum up the courage to talk to your spouse. If you can, talk honestly with each other about what you want...

German opposition seeks inquiry over Scholz and tax scheme

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:46:09 GMT

BERLIN (AP) — Germany’s main opposition party said Tuesday that it will seek a parliamentary inquiry into Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s handling of a tax evasion scam involving a private bank before he became the country’s leader. The center-right Union bloc said it will call for the national parliament to set up a commission of inquiry when it returns after the Easter break in mid-April. That should be a formality because it requires the backing of a quarter of all lawmakers, and the Union — with 197 of the lower house’s 736 seats — holds more than that. The issue has been a longstanding, though so far minor, irritant for Scholz. An inquiry is already underway in the state legislature in Hamburg, where Scholz was mayor from 2011 to 2018. He then served as Germany’s finance minister until becoming chancellor in late 2021.Testifying in Hamburg in August, Scholz denied intervening on behalf of the bank involved in the scam. He said that “there was no political i...

Pakistan court rules delay of provinces’ votes unlawful

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:46:09 GMT

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled a panel’s decision to delay provincial elections was unconstitutional and ordered the votes held next month, according to a lawyer involved in the case. Ali Zafar, the attorney for former premier Imran Khan’s Tahreek-e-Insaf party, said the three-member panel of judges headed by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandyal set the new vote for May 14.The elections board on March 22 postponed the vote in Punjab province until October 8 for lack of funds and security. The date for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province was under review when the panel said a vote there could not be held by a constitutional deadline. The court’s decision comes months after after Khan’s party dissolved the regional assemblies in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces in a failed bid to force snap national elections. Since his ouster last April in a no-confidence vote in Parliament, Khan has been demanding early elections. Prime Minister Shahbaz S...

EU lashes out at China for support of Russia in Ukraine war

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:46:09 GMT

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union’s foreign policy chief on Tuesday lashed out at China for its support of Russia amid the invasion of Ukraine and called it “a blatant violation” of Beijing’s United Nations commitments. “There cannot be siding with the aggressor,” Josep Borrell said. “There is a clear expectation from a permanent member of the (U.N.) Security Council to stand up in defense of international rules-based order and China as a moral duty to contribute to a fair peace.” Standing alongside visiting U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Borrell was forceful in his condemnation of a nation that has increasingly moved from being a partner to being a rival on the global stage. The comments come just ahead of a visit of EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen together with French President Emmanuel Macron to China, where both will press the point that EU-China relations will pivot on Beijing’s friendship with Russia. Macron and von der Leyen are set to...

LONDON (AP) — Retired British boxer Amir Khan has been banned from all sports for two years after testing positive for a prohibited substance following what proved to be the last fight of his career.Khan, a former light-welterweight world champion and Olympic silver-medalist, returned a positive result for anabolic agent ostarine after his loss to Kell Brook in Manchester in February 2022, UK Anti-Doping said Tuesday.Ostarine is a selective androgen receptor modulator that can help muscle growth and, according to UKAD, is designed to have similar effects to testosterone.Khan, who announced his retirement three months after the fight, accepted a violation of anti-doping rules but said he had not intentionally ingested the substance.
