Ambrose: Biden’s plan to tax people for money that isn’t money

Ambrose: Biden’s plan to tax people for money that isn’t money President Joe Biden, eager to get more tax money to pay for the faults of others along with his own disastrously irresponsible, inflationary overspending, has said that American billionaires have tax rate of just 8%. Here, then, is a great excuse to hit this relatively small group of 700 or maybe 1,000 people with a fiscal fist as big as the Treasury Department without worrying about losing millions of votes.A difficulty for Biden, however, is that the tax rate is more than three times bigger than he said, 25.6%, either demonstrating that he made a major mistake or qualifies to be called a political trickster. I endorse the second possibility, seeing as how the tiny-tax assertion could confuse the public enough for him to seem a hero catching cheapskate billionaires even though the top 1% of taxpayers deliver something like 43% of all federal taxes. The way Biden arrives at his deception is by saying the billionaires and still other super-rich tax targets pay nothing for the unrealiz...

Editorial: Want affordable housing? Build more homes in Mass.

Editorial: Want affordable housing? Build more homes in Mass. The notion is supply-and-demand simplicity itself: Massachusetts needs affordable housing, so why not build more houses? That’s the position of the Massachusetts Association of Realtors, who visited Beacon Hill Monday in opposition to transfer tax and rent control bills.“Rent control tries to attack a symptom of our lack of building. And that’s not the way to fix the issue. We need to build more housing,” said Justin Davidson, the association’s government affairs director, according to State House News.“If we build enough housing, if people have the options of where to live and what type of home to live in, we don’t need rent control,” Davidson said. That’s long been an issue in the Bay State, particularly in Greater Boston. Rents are high, home prices astronomical, and so begins the exodus to the suburbs and beyond in hopes of staying ahead of exorbitant costs. Sometimes that trek leads out of state. Our population outpaces our hou...

Red Sox squander strong Paxton start, lose to Rockies 4-3 in 10 innings The Red Sox had every opportunity to put the Colorado Rockies away. They had old friend Connor Seabold on the ropes in the first inning, tagging the ex-Red Sox hurler for three straight singles out of the gate before squandering the prime scoring opportunity and coming away with nothing. They took a 2-1 lead on a Christian Arroyo solo shot in the seventh, only to immediately allow Colorado to tie it right back up the following inning.Rafael Devers put a charge into what would have been the go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth, but Rockies outfielder Nolan Jones made an unbelievable catch at the bullpen wall to keep the ball in the yard and the game tied. Finally, with two outs and the extra-innings ghost runner still at second, Nick Pivetta loaded the bases and walked in the go-ahead run. With a steady rain devolving into a complete deluge, the Rockies added another on a Triston Casas error at first and the grounds crew came out to stop the action with the Red Sox trailing by two in...

Chris Hemsworth back in action in ‘Extraction 2’ for Netflix Chris Hemsworth has been a mighty Thor many times but to return to his black ops mercenary Tyler Rake in the “Extraction 2” sequel, streaming Friday on Netflix, was something different.“Extraction,” adapted from a graphic novel, introduced Rake, a former Australian Army Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) operator turned rescuer-for-hire, recruited to save an incarcerated drug dealer’s son in Bangladesh. The novel ended with Rake dead. The movie followed suit. “When we began the original script, the character was done by the end, riddled with bullets, a piece of Swiss cheese toppling off a bridge. That completion felt necessary for the story of this redemption tale,” Hemsworth, 39, said in a Zoom interview Monday.Rake didn’t stay dead for long. Before filming finished, Hemsworth and director Sam Hayward “started talking about if we ever did another one, what the character would do. How the world could expand. They decided, “We should give ourselves an out in case audiences respond. So...

Dear Abby: Teen’s disturbing behavior worries uncle Dear Abby: My nephew is 19. I have been co-parenting him and his sister since they were 15. He has some issues that are normal for his generation. What isn’t normal is his inflated sense that life is all about him. If it doesn’t benefit him, he doesn’t do it. I have been giving him the structure, guidance and direction that he has asked for, but he’s not changing. His girlfriend has been on him about his poor hygiene, but he doesn’t change.Lately, he has become withdrawn and silent, and he is by himself a lot. He literally sleeps all day. Oh, and he’s a compulsive liar, so we don’t know if anything he tells us is truthful. He does have depression issues and some trauma. Those signs are easy to spot in him. What gives, if you know? — Observant Uncle in IndianaDear Uncle: Has your nephew been treated for his depression or trauma? Whether the answer is yes or no, it’s time for him to be checked by a physician to determine whether he...

Palestinian President Abbas begins China visit as Beijing seeks larger role in Mideast BEIJING (AP) — Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas began a visit to China on Tuesday that comes as Beijing is seeking a larger role in Middle East politics and competing for energy resources. In announcing the visit, China’s Foreign Ministry said China was willing to help broker relations between the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli government that have deteriorated to the lowest level in recent years. The ministry did not say who Abbas would meet in Beijing or give other details of his four-day visit.Increased fighting over the last year between Israel and the Palestinians in the West Bank has resulted in the deadliest period of violence between the sides in years in that territory. The visit also comes after China hosted talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia that resulted in the two restoring diplomatic relations. That development was seen as representing a diplomatic victory for China as Gulf Arab states perceive the United States slowly withdrawing from the wider region. But ...

Walt Nauta is the latest Trump loyalist to face potential jail time after working for him NEW YORK (AP) — When former President Donald Trump appears in federal court Tuesday, he will be joined at the defense table by a man well-practiced in standing by his side: his valet turned alleged co-conspirator, Walt Nauta.Nauta, a Navy veteran who fetched Trump’s Diet Cokes as his valet at the White House before joining him as a personal aide at Mar-a-Lago, now finds himself in legal jeopardy alongside the former president. He is accused of moving boxes from the White House at Trump’s direction and then lying about it to investigators.Nauta is the latest in a series of Trump loyalists to face potential jail time after his work for the former president. Michael Cohen, Trump’s longtime fixer and attorney, spent more than 13 months in prison over payouts he helped arrange during the 2016 presidential race to keep women from going public about alleged sexual encounters with Trump. Trump will face judge in historic court appearance over charges he mishandled secret documents MIAMI (AP) — Donald Trump was set to make his first court appearance Tuesday in a historic criminal case charging the former president with hoarding top secret government documents, boastfully displaying them to visitors and trying to hide them from investigators who demanded them back.Trump approached his Miami court date with characteristic bravado, insisting as he has done through years of legal woes that he has done nothing wrong and was being persecuted for political purposes. But the gravity of the moment is unmistakable as he answers to 37 felony counts that accuse him of willfully retaining classified records that prosecutors say could have jeopardized national security if exposed. The case is laden with political implications for Trump, who currently holds the dominant spot in the early days of the 2024 Republican presidential primary. But it also poses profound legal consequences given the prospect of a years-long prison sentence. Even for a defendant whose post-presidentia...

Often sidelined at Pride, transgender and nonbinary people move front and center HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Kara Murphy, a transgender woman helping to organize the Union County Pride in a suburb of Charlotte, North Carolina, is heartened to see Pride celebrations across the country, big and small, shining a spotlight on transgender rights this year. “When we look and see who’s standing up for us, it kind of signals the strength of the movement,” she said. Whether it’s transgender grand marshals at the massive New York City Pride parade or a photo display of transgender victims of violence at the much smaller festival in Hastings, Nebraska, many celebrations this June are taking a public stand against state legislation targeting transgender people. Some Prides are putting transgender people front and center at events where they’ve often been sidelined because of a historical emphasis on gay and lesbian rights, along with the same sorts of prejudice and misinformation held by many straight, cisgender people about trans lives. The growing number of new laws ...
